Kaifi Azmis family donated his personal collection of 5000 books to The Maulana Azad Library at Aligarh Muslim University under a special section called Kaifi Azmis Collection.
It was formally inaugurated by Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi in the presence of Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah and several dignitaries.The Librarian exclaimed that he had never seen a private collection that had been preserved and catalogued so systematically.
“This was his only material possession apart from 18 Mont Blanc pens” said daughter Shabana. “It was a tough call to take – to empty out his bookshelves and part with the books because Abba was so attached to them – i used to always find him reading or writing- he was a true book worm. However we decided that since AMU library is digitised it would make his books accessible all over the world- and now that I see how beautifully the collection has been displayed I know that our decision was correct.”
