Shooting for my longtime friend and colleague Baba (Mandrax the magician) Azmi’s maiden directorial venture “Mee Raqsan” I was privileged to visit Kaifi Azmi Sahabs birthplace MejwaN (pop:600) where he went to stay and work in the early ‘70s despite a debilitating paralytic episode.
Learning about his selfless service for a place which was not even on the map of the country, which had no school or electricity or running water s lesson in living by ones convictions for basic rights, education and women’s empowerment. His efforts resulted in a post office, a basic health center and the beginnings of a girls school.
The baton has since been taken up by Shabana and has resulted in the most self aware, dignified and clean village I have ever seen in the country. I didn’t think my admiration for the Azmis could go any higher but after this visit it has shot skyward – Naseeruddin Shah
